Drought hit the Los Angeles region in the first years of the 20th century, highlighting an urgent need to find a better, more consistent water supply if city leaders were to transform the city into a major West Coast metropolis. Through the end of the 19th century, a private corporation called the Los Angeles City Water Company had maintained control over and responsibility for the city’s water supply system. In 1902, the municipal government bought the franchise, retaining the City Water Company’s superintendent, William Mulholland, as head of the new Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Mulholland, a self-trained engineer born in Ireland, had begun his career as a ditch-cleaner for the water company and risen to become its superintendent at the age of 31.

Accelerate & Scale High Tech Production

With the help of his former boss Fred Eaton (who had also served as mayor of Los Angeles), Mulholland identified a potential solution in the Owens Valley region, located on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada some 200 miles away. The engineers estimated that the Owens River, which ran through this region, could provide more than enough water to meet the needs of a growing Los Angeles. If both parties agree there is a mutual fit, we will propose a Phase 1 as a low-cost, low-risk way to establish your project concept along with cost and timelines. “About 15 years ago, while working at a startup as an engineering director looking for a competent supplier I ran into the Owens Design team. Since that time I started using Owens services and was amazed about the expediency and professionalism with which they addressed our challenges. In early 2014, John and Bob invited me to join the ranks to expand our markets and develop our customer base.

Owens Design (ODI) designs and builds advanced custom manufacturing equipment for technology companies from VC-funded start-ups to S&P500 corporations. For over 35 years ODI has been developing leading edge manufacturing equipment in the Silicon Valley, specializing in the development of complex, high speed, high precision and mission-critical process, metrology and automation factory equipment. In 1956, the State Department of Water Resources reported that Los Angeles was exporting only 320,000 acre-feet (390 million cubic metres) of water of the 590,000 acre⋅ft (730 million m3) available in the Owens Valley and Mono Basin. Three years later, the State Water Rights Board warned Los Angeles that they could lose rights to the water they were permitted for but not appropriating. By 1974, exports climbed to 450,000 acre⋅ft (560 million m3) per year.[29] Unlike the First Aqueduct which was built entirely by Public Works, the Second Los Angeles Aqueduct was primarily built on contract by various private construction firms including R.A. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power managed the project and performed some finishing construction on the Mojave conduit and Jawbone & Dove Spring pipelines.

The dam failure is the worst man-made flood disaster in the US in the 20th century and the second largest single-event loss of life in California history after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. “When Bill Owens founded Owens Design in 1983, his vision was to create a company where talented engineers and technicians worked together to design and build manufacturing equipment for the emerging high technology companies of the day. Since that time, Owens has developed custom equipment for every new wave of technology emerging from Silicon Valley, from hard disk drives, semiconductors, solar cells, energy storage, medical devices and consumer mobile products.

Since 1983, Owens has worked with OEMs and manufacturers for startups to fortune 500 companies, to design and build over 2,500 tools with 100% delivery. At Owens Design, we start with an exploratory process that differentiates us from other equipment development providers. Semiconductor equipment product development can be very expensive, so we have developed a phased development process to help our customers determine the best approach and architect a cost-effective solution. For over 40 years, Owens Design has successfully delivered hundreds of tools to all major Semiconductor fabs around the world with a record of 100% delivery. Our team of highly skilled engineers design and build protoypes based on proven platforms to accelerate and scale your product development and manufacturing operations, efficiently while minimizing risk.

This multi-phased process minimizes roadblocks later on in the development process. For design and construction purposes the aqueduct was divided into Northern and Southern sections and the two are connected by the San Francisquito Tunnels, which are part of the First Aqueduct. The aqueduct as originally constructed consisted of six storage reservoirs and 215 mi (346 km) of conduit. Beginning 3.5 mi (5.6 km) north of Blackrock (Inyo County), the aqueduct diverts the Owens River into an unlined canal to begin its 233 mi (375 km) journey south to the Lower San Fernando Reservoir.[19] This reservoir was later renamed the Lower Van Norman Reservoir. Owens distanced himself from it and stressed that he and his company had not known anything about it in advance; he also banned Jera from his shows.

Throughout this process, the Owens Design team will provide expert guidance on how to manage tradeoffs – and guide you to the best solution. To establish the necessary technical and business alignment, Owens Design will consider your business, key technical challenges, cost, schedule demands, and vision for the project. We'll discuss objectives, obstacles, timelines, and more to gain a comprehensive understanding of what you want to achieve. Following Phase 1, the customer and Owens Design will move on with the tool development and build. The number of men who were on the payroll the first year was 2,629 and this number peaked at 6,060 in May 1909.

If you’re an OEM, we’ll discuss your IP and product concept – under NDA and in the strictest confidence. Please send your resume to specifying in the subject line that position in which you are interested. The last segment of pipe, known as the Saugus Pipeline,[34] carries water south past Bouquet Canyon, Soledad Canyon and Placerita Canyon in the city of Santa Clarita. From there it roughly parallels Sierra Highway before it enters Magazine Canyon near the Terminal structure and Cascades. Water from the Terminal structure can then flow to either the Cascade or penstock to the Foothill Power Plant and into the Upper Van Norman Reservoir. We start with in-home consultations and provide space planning, budgeting, selection and design of materials, furnishings, window coverings, lighting and accessories.

Owens went on to call Jera his muse in several statements which he gave afterwards. Tragedy struck in 1928, when the St. Francis Dam in northern Los Angeles County burst, inundating the towns of Castaic Junction, Fillmore, Bardsdale and Piru with billions of gallons of water and drowning hundreds of residents. An investigation concluded that the rock in the area had been too unstable to support the dam. Though Mulholland was cleared of charges in connection with the incident, his reputation was ruined, and he was forced to resign. The Los Angeles Aqueduct was extended further north by the early 1940s through the Mono Basin Project, finally reaching a total length of 338 miles (544 kilometers).

The Owens Design process for vetting your projects, designing your concept, building a prototype, and scaling production are designed to speed your efforts and minimize your risks. Below is an overview of how we work to ensure the success of your automation project. Owens Design has a 100% track record of project delivery, in part because we are as selective about the projects we take on as our customers are in choosing Owens Design as their design and build partner. Startups use Owens Design to Bridge the valley of death by working with our experienced design and manufacturing team to accelerate time to market. Established brands use Owens Design to quickly capture new product opportunities using our team as an extension of your team. Enable new manufacturing processes with production ready equipment supported by 40 years of automation experience with 100% delivery.

If mutual qualification is established, a Phase 1 is a fast, cost-effective way to minimize risk for the most complex custom automation equipment projects, especially those on accelerated schedules. “Shortly after Bill Owens hired me as a Mechanical Design Engineer, I encountered a new experience working directly with customers. I found it rewarding to create and execute plans to bring their equipment to “life,” and my role in managing projects emerged. “Working at Owens Design for over 20 years, it still excites me to see client’s “ideas” and “goals” come in the front door and leave on a truck as complex pieces of machinery. In 1907, Los Angeles voters approved another bond issue for the aqueduct, this time for $23 million, and construction began the following year. Some 4,000 laborers worked at top speed, using new technologies such as the Caterpillar tractor and setting records for miles tunneled and pipe cut.

In the 1920s, Owens Valley residents grew angry and frustrated after seeing their farms drained of water, nearly every drop of which was pumped into the steadily growing San Fernando Valley. In 1924 and again in 1927, protesters blew up parts of the aqueduct, marking a particularly explosive chapter in the so-called “water wars” that had divided southern California. For a limited time, Anthropologie is offering 30% off a beautiful selection of Mother's Day gifts including jewelry, clothing, shoes, decor and more....

In 1910, employment dropped to 1,150 due to financial reasons but rebounded later in the year. The number of laborers working on the aqueduct at its peak was 3,900.[15][16][17][18] In 1913, the City of Los Angeles completed construction of the first Los Angeles Aqueduct. The city acquired three limestone quarries, two Tufa quarries and it constructed and operated a cement plant in Monolith, California, which could produce 1,200 barrels of Portland cement per day.

Our team meets or exceeds all benchmarks of architecture and design fields within the US. Before putting pen to paper, we like to identify a common communication style and define project goals. With these established, we develop the design and visual language of the space, discovering how your brand will be imbued within every physical element. Once you begin to stack up board-specific color and shape definitions such as these, legends or keys become essential, particularly when the intention is to create a template for general use. After stacking platforms in importance from top to bottom, indentation creates a helpful secondary prioritization.

When setting up a board for personal reference, I don’t censor myself that much or worry about being explicit in definition. I fully flex my visual and conceptual thinking to give abstract concepts basic form, which in turn creates groupings of objects and allows those groups to be placed in relation to one another. This post focuses specifically on the ways that shape defines visual hierarchy, along with time-saving mechanics in Miro that significantly speed up diagramming and documenting.

Where does Chipman Design Architecture, Inc. provide services?

They chose Chipman to design their flagship location downtown, which marked a departure from specializing in stand-alone stores to smaller footprints that often rely solely on foot traffic. The Chicago expansion continued in 2013 to a location near the Chicago Theater at State and Lake streets, illustrating a lesson in how urban stores can’t be treated with suburban cookie-cutter design. This emerged from an exploration of needs drivers, and while it wasn’t useful in template rollout, it served as a great framing element when grouping like platforms and programs. Once the preliminary scale is locked down, you can make large tweaks by dragging orthogonally (left–right or up–down) along the axis of focus then dragging orthogonally along the opposite axis. Now that you have your text and object elements built, you’ll want to save them as a template for quick access when creating new boards. To address that challenge, developers and designers are mulling interior and exterior changes that could drastically repurpose space, an overhaul that will require both customers and merchants to readjust their experiences and expectations.

Throughout the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009, we doubled down on our client partnerships, building more fluid and non-traditional relationships by offering new services like lease reviews and architectural test fits. After establishing basic text and frame sizing, the next step is to create priority or importance of platform use. Our exploration into shapes earlier offers some great, simple solutions for this, with a particular focus placed on platform/rectangle alignment. Deciding on an axis of focus (X or Y) before center-point scaling (alt + text frame corner drag) allows you to more easily pinpoint the appropriate scale of your type. Project Management (project infrastructure planning, roles and responsibilities, dashboards and a host of workflow documentation). I picked this method up in Alina Wheeler’s book Designing Brand Identity, and it’s proven invaluable when creating layouts and visual hierarchies.

Your zoom can’t pull any closer than 400%, and the buttons that adjust size don’t go any lower than 10pt. So, 100% 14pt font just barely lets you go one layer deeper in thought and conceptualization. We are proud to build teams from qualified candidates regardless of their gender, background, race, religion or sexual orientation as a step towards true equality in the workplace.

An examination of a project infrastructure planning methodology is covered at the close of the post, employing these shape-centric visual techniques. Based on nearly four decades of architecture expertise, we have developed unparalleled project protocols addressing issues typical to corporate expansion programs. We are skilled at developing both national and regional prototypes, in addition to taking the client through construction documents. With custom processes developed for communicating change management within the prototype, we are able to provide your team the organization and the expertise to develop, adapt and maintain your prototypes.

Shape, color, and content – these three categories build the sequence of cognition or the order in which we perceive information through visual perception. If you’re only using content (words) to convey meaning, you’re losing a ton of terrific opportunities for more nuanced and dynamic definitions. We strive to build extraordinary experiences in physical environments on a national scale. Since that initial flagship store, collaboration with Chick-fil-A’s design and construction team has grown to accommodate its expanding national program. Chipman regularly provides architectural and design services for drive-thru restaurants, Urban In-Line stores, mall locations, and special projects. For some of the brand’s most complicated, multi-story locations in Manhattan, Chipman Design is able to leverage its in-house Visualization Studio to design virtual walkthroughs and 3D simulations that ensure execution is exactly right. The first step is to perform the internal due diligence and assemble all platforms into a single board to serve as a platform infrastructure kick-off template. I’ve included both the preliminary assembly I performed along with the final platform template to highlight the difference between boards made for initial/personal reference and boards made for general company use.

A firm grasp of these techniques and mechanics will significantly enhance the speed with which you can create boards and allow for more expansive and robust visualization. Pictured below is the finished project infrastructure, created from a core template with all non-applicable platforms removed. A Miro project was created with the account name and this board dropped in, ensuring that all team members would be able to quickly reference the core. We were also able to determine who had received training in fundamentals and best practices based on our color-coding association and quickly get everyone on the same page, saving countless unnecessary questions within the project lifecycle. We strategically assemble teams to best support a program’s unique needs that guarantees a consistent partnership with a group of talented experts who are there from beginning to end.Our clients are true partners. Together we work closely to create project programming that carries a client’s brand forward.

For example, a lot of space once used for sales or dining will now be taken over by behind-the-scenes work as vendors continue to shift to more takeout and pickup service. Chipman Design Architecture has weathered over four decades of economic turbulence by consistently leading with our values. We believe people come first, standing as a partner by our clients’ side, and committing the talent and resources needed to innovate through any storm. Throughout the construction process, our team acts as an extension of your team to manage the project from construction kick-off to turnover, right up to grand opening. Restaurant review: The Strand House in Manhattan Beach Los Angeles Times

the strand house

— pizza, handmade pasta, vegetable sides and the usual suspects in terms of mains — with mixed results. The Strand House is a Manhattan Beach-based eatery, drawing crowds of LA's affluent with four floors of patio dining, with a menu from the team behind Grace and Gjelina. Located in a giant three-story building with unobstructed ocean views in Manhattan Beach, you’re not going to find much better sights than The Strand House’s. Sitting in the main dining room and watching the sunset with a margarita in one hand and hamachi crudo in the other is something we could do every day for the rest of our lives.

Southern California woman pleads guilty in $150-million counterfeit postage scheme

the strand house

Not only are the beach town vibes great here, but the food is excellent as well. Some of the best cafes include Sloopy’s Beach Cafe and Cafe Wild or stop into Two Guns Espresso for a great cup of coffee. There’s nothing quite like a romantic sunset picnic at the beach.

#17 – Play Beach Volleyball

Located directly in front of the Manhattan Beach Pier, it’s an easy stop while out enjoying the downtown (though making a reservation ahead of time is usually a must). The menu features seasonal highlights from Southern California’s bounty of fresh produce, and the thoughtful cocktail and wine programs complement the food perfectly. But with the Strand House, the Zislis Group is trying something different from its successful run of beachy restaurants. It has overhauled the former Beaches and turned it into a lavish three-level restaurant and lounge that looks more to Hollywood for its style cues than to the town’s laid-back beach culture. And the Cal-Mediterranean food borrows from what’s perennially popular in L.A.

How Long Is the Manhattan Beach Boardwalk?

Oceanside and Strand beaches are still closed to the public as an environmental group cleans up the debris that has washed ashore. The fire also damaged a vacant restaurant that used to be Ruby’s Diner and a snack shop that housed the Brine Box, a seafood eatery. For a casual bite to eat or a coffee break, take a walk along Highland Ave. near El Porto.

Just grab a blanket, some snacks and drinks, and cuddle up on the beach to watch the beautiful sunset. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a long day and enjoy some quality time with your loved one. Head to the downtown Manhattan Beach Farmers Market to find locally grown produce, products from specialty ranchers, and sustainably sourced local fresh seafood. In 2014, Keanu Reeves’ house in the Hollywood Hills was targeted by burglars who entered the property through a smashed window. The burglars, wearing ski masks, ransacked the house for several minutes before leaving with some of Reeves’ personal belongings. These films blend intense gunplay with gritty martial arts in a stylized manner. Additionally, Seth Rogen has explored action in Pineapple Express and The Green Hornet, eliciting varied responses. Hold onto your hats, as Keanu Reeves boasts a filmography longer than my list of exes (just kidding).

According to reports, the break-in occurred during the daytime, while construction work was underway at Reeves’ residence. The burglars used the commotion caused by the construction workers to their advantage. Police were informed immediately, and they arrived at the scene soon after. The details of Keanu Reeves and Alexandra Grant’s romantic relationship are very clear. The ongoing reports suggest that they have known each other for a significant amount of time and are now officially in a relationship. Together, they started X Artists’ Books, a place that mixes literature and visual art.

How to Extend the Life of Your Gutters...

Soft, plush textiles and subtle lighting create an atmosphere where one can easily drift into dreamland, cocooned from the world’s hustle. Keanu’s kitchen, a marvel of culinary design, combines sleek, modern appliances with rustic charm, embodying the heart of the home. The dining area, adjacent to the kitchen, serves as a vibrant social space where friends and family come together, sharing meals and moments against the backdrop of the city lights.

An intruder made it to the second floor of L.A. Mayor Bass’ home: Here’s what we know

Despite their universal appeal, some may not be aware that they previously starred together in the 2015 home-invasion thriller movie, Knock Knock. Before putting roots down in the Hollywood Hills, Keanu Reeves spent a significant amount of time living in hotels, he told GQ. According to The Things, he also stayed in rental homes around LA, but nothing compared to having his own space, he said at a music festival. The actor is so private it doesn’t appear he has ever spoken publicly about his house and its details. At the same time, intense public fascination with Reeves has led to alarming invasions of privacy over the years. His peaceful estates act as necessary refuges from dangerous stalkers and prying media.

Architectural Features: A Symphony of Design

Both the New York townhouse and Hawaii estate exemplify Reeves’ affinity for privacy. They are located in exclusive communities known for seclusion and security. Mature oaks and landscaping shield the home from prying eyes and city noise. Patios and lounging areas tucked into the greenery provide space for Reeves to enjoy the sweeping views and serenity of the property.

Instead, our beloved Neo lives smack-dab in the heart of L.A., up in the Hollywood Hills. Keanu Reeves' home in Los Angeles is quite stunning but unfortunately, he also lives quite a private life so his home might not be open to the public. Hopefully, in the future, we hope to get a glimpse of how he has planned his house. According to one of our favorite sources on celebrity net worths, Keanu Reeves is worth between $350 million and $360 million. At one point in his career, he was making a reported $15 million per box office hit, but more recently he has been paid much less. The single-home mansion is a 1988 build with two bedrooms, three baths, a three-car garage, a pool, and a courtyard.

The beloved actor currently resides in a lavish estate, and his fans have been curious to know more about it. In this article, we will take a look at Keanu Reeves house and what makes it so special. There are direct links between his career projects and real estate holdings.

Despite being born in Beirut, Lebanon, he is a Canadian actor renowned for his roles in the genres of science fiction, action, and comedy. Reeves has enjoyed significant success in a number of fan-favorite sci-fi films, including 'The Matrix' and 'John Wick'. Despite its insane price, the home has just 2 bedrooms and 3 baths, sitting on a .41 acre lot. The single-family home, which was originally built in 1988 also has a pool, a three-car garage and what looks like a courtyard based on aerial views of the property.

With a career spanning decades, he has graced the screen in 70 films to date, excluding his television work. Some notable titles include “Speed,” “The Matrix” trilogy, “John Wick,” and his upcoming role in “Toy Story 4” (currently in post-production). The picturesque lake house itself sits on Maple Lake, right in the Maple Lake Forest Preserve just off 95th Street in the southwest suburbs. There is a balcony with a stunning seascape that opens from the living area.

The outdoor area also has a fire pit and a grill, making it perfect for entertaining guests or just relaxing with friends and family. Keanu's house has a simple yet elegant interior design that is consistent with the minimalist approach of the exterior. The house has an open floor plan that connects the kitchen, dining, and living areas. The house also has a personal cinema room, where Keanu enjoys his favorite movies.

Exclusive cruise terminals are Terminal 26 (Holland America Line), Terminal 21 (Carnival Cruise Line), Terminal 19 (Princess Cruises), Terminals 18 and 25 (Royal Caribbean).

Costs were ~USD 10 million (to service one slip) and involve substantial infrastructure improvements. Ship operators must spend ~USD 1 million to make a vessel shorepower-ready. A typical container ship in port uses about as much energy as a single terminal at Boston’s Logan Airport, while RMS Queen Mary 2 requires 13 megawatts (equal to the entire airport). The following NY & NJ cruise port map shows the locations of all three cruise terminals (NYC's Manhattan and Brooklyn, and Bayonne NJ's Cape Liberty). The seaport has 4x containership terminals, ranking it (by combined volume) the US East Coast's largest, USA's 3rd busiest and the world's 20th largest cargo port. In May 2013, Port NYC started a project to raise Bayonne Bridge in order to allow access to the world's largest container ships to the cargo ports of New York City and New Jersey (Elizabeth and Newark).

The first ship (Disney Dream) started year-round homeporting here on November 20, 2023. A second DCL vessel (Disney Magic)  was scheduled to homeport only seasonally (starting on May 9, 2025). The new Disney terminal was officially opened/inaugurated on November 13th. The ceremony was attended by Sharon Siskie (DCL's Senior VP and General Manager). The shore-power project's cost was estimated at ~US$20 million per terminal. The total ~US$160 million investment is expected to be financed through federal and state grants, plus contributions from Broward County , FPL, and the three participating cruise companies.

Honduras is Port Everglades' largest trade partner by shipping volume, including total TEUs. Over USD 2,12 billion worth of goods are annually shipped through the seaport. Port Charleston is located in South Carolina (SC), on the Atlantic coast of the USA.

The previous single-day record was also in Port Everglades and reported on March 13, 2016 (55885 passengers). The plan for development of the Charleston cruise ship terminal includes construction of a new building. The Ports Authority (SPA) will sell 0,15 km2 (0,06 ml2) Union Pier property for private development right after the completion of the new terminal. This premium waterfront area will be developed as a new neighborhood and will be of no maritime use. It will feature new streets, public parks, shops, residential homes and businesses, thus increasing the access to the waterfront.

The facilities are vending machines, check-in, restrooms and customs. Brooklyn New York cruise port terminal can accommodate only one ship. Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale's cruise port) is a major seaport in Broward County (Florida USA), and currently ranked the world's 3rd-largest cruise port - after PortMiami and Port Canaveral.

During summer are operated mainly roundtrips to Bermuda as well as Transatlantic crossings (USA-UK/Southampton). In autumn are offered "Fall Foliage" cruises to Canada and New England USA. In mid-2017 were completed the works on Cruise Terminal 4's extensions (project cost USD 13,6 million) which allows now docking of larger vessels. Port Everglades is South Florida's main seaport for importing, storage and distribution of petroleum products and alternative fuels.

The shore-to-ship electric power supply project was first announced in 2011. Season 2018 featured two large newbuild liners - Carnival Horizon ( GT-tons, 4700 passengers) and Norwegian Bliss ( GT-tons, 4900 passengers). NY-NJ port's main imports are petroleum, appliances, vehicles, plastics, electronics, chemicals, perfumes, pharmaceuticals, optical and photographic materials, precious gems and metals. Cape Liberty Cruise Port is also in New York Harbor but is part of Bayonne City (New Jersey).

Cruise ships and ferries in Port New York and New Jersey dock at the berths of Cape Liberty Cruise Port (Upper Bay, Bayonne NJ), Brooklyn Cruise Terminal (Upper Bay, NYC) and New York Passenger Ship Terminal (Hudson River, NYC). Port NYC NJ (officially "Port of New York and New Jersey") handles a huge cargo shipping volume and is US East Coast's biggest seaport. Northport Terminal 4 was reopened in 2015 following a USD 24 million renovation and modernization project for greater efficiency and passenger convenience. In early-June 2017 was announced that Port Everglades invests USD 114+ million in Terminal 25's renovations. This is the preferential berth for RCG-Royal Caribbean Group ships.

The waterway's depth is 43 ft (13 m), ranking it USA's deepest seaport on the Atlantic coast (south of Norfolk VA, not on the US East Coast in general). The new passenger terminal's construction will cost USD 35 million. Public hearing was also called by the US Army Corps of Engineers after receiving a new federal permit for putting additional pilings beneath one of the old terminal's warehouses. Connecting to Con Edison power grid, the shorepower system allows ships to run their onboard systems without using diesel generators. This eliminates ~1500 tons of CO2, ~95 tons of NOx, and ~6,5 tons of soot/particulate matter annually.

At first glance many mistake Victoria for an English coastal city or northern European town. Full of greenery, pubs and Victorian architecture, it's difficult to believe that this was a tent city full of rough and tumble miners just 150 years ago. On a cruise to Alaska, explore the Butchart Gardens, tour the pub scene and taste some of the local brews or sail the bay for a whale-watching adventure. Valdez is situated in Prince William Sound and serves as the gateway to the interior of Alaska. Often referred to as the "Little Switzerland", Valdez is known for its breathtaking panorama of snow-capped mountains and glaciers. It is also well-known for its role in the transportation of crude oil from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, which ends in Valdez.

Large Ship Cruise + Land Tour

If you want to see landlocked areas, such as Denali National Park, you can tack a cruise line-operated tour onto the beginning or end of your sailing for a seamless land and sea vacation. It's easier than fumbling with multiple train, bus, ferry and hotel reservations to cobble together the same trip on your own. They want to admire its rugged beauty, seek out wildlife (such as eagles, bears and whales) and learn about its native cultures and Gold Rush history. It's so far from the rest of the mainland U.S. that it's become a bucket list destination, especially for travelers looking to visit each of the 50 states. After a relaxing cruise, does the possibility of charting your own course intrigue you?

HAL prides itself on having more permits for Glacier Bay National Park visits than any other cruise line. The cruise line also offers beloved live music programming, which I got to experience firsthand on a summer 2023 Alaska sailing.
